Info on Grandpa Joe and his family...including immigration date.

I am related to Joseph D.; he would be my great-great uncle. You have his father and mother as Louis and Marie
Billette. Marie died on May 14, 1926 in Minneapolis; we guess that Toussaint died sometime between 1900 and
1908—“on the farm” according to my grandmother. She remembers Joseph’s family, telling me last week from
memory that he had a son named Delphas. We have Joseph D.’s parents as Toussaint and Marie (nee Loiselle)
Billette. The child on the 1900 Census whom you have identified as possibly “Andy” was, in fact, named Aime.
Aime Toussaint Billette was my great grandfather; his daughter Lorraine (my grandmother) is living in California (age
91). When he became an adult, Aime used the name Emil; he died in Black Diamond, Washington, in 1937
(myocarditis from having rheumatic fever as a child). His death certificate identifies his mother as Marie Loiselle
(actually spelled “Mary Louizelle” in the document); she was born in Minnesota in 1864. His brother Mack (Maquire
on the 1900 Census) Billette also moved to Washington State; he died in Klickitat County in 1970. Arthur served in
World War I and was gassed; he was knifed to death in the hallway outside his apartment in Minneapolis in
1941—having apparently argued with someone about the war in Europe. Delvina married a man name Plante, but we
lost track of her after 1920. I think she remarried. Della is identified as a Billette in 1910, but as a Loiselle in 1920.
We’re not sure whether she’s a late child or an adopted relation. Emil Billette had gone north to work as a railroad
engineer at the Uno Mine in St. Louis County before his father’s death, so Joe (who married sooner) inherited the farm
in Wright County. Emil married Emily White in Hibbing in 1911; they had three children: Lorraine, Mardell and
Dean A. Billette. Dean served as a radioman on B-17s during World War II and died a few years ago in Missouri.
Mardell married Robert Hall and died in Colorado.
Toussaint, my great-great grandfather, appears on the city directory for Minneapolis in 1889, 1890 and 1891—living
at 1156 North Fremont Avenue. This residence stayed in the family for many years. He was in Minneapolis that because we have Aime’s baptismal certificate from St. Clothilde’s Church (Catholic, and now called St. Anne’s),
dated February 14, 1886. The French-speaking parish of St. Clothilde’s was established in 1884 to serve a large
population of francophone immigrants from Quebec. Toussaint’s answers on the 1900 Census indicate that he arrived
in the US in 1866 and that he was naturalized. I’m currently seeking the record of his naturalization, which will give
more information on his origins.

Quilt from the Civil War

(This quilt was made by my g-g-g-grandma! I got this picture and information from a website (I did NOT write the caption or take the picture): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~patty0802/bistodeau.htm

-JMB)

Emelina Bistodeau (Dr. Louis' wife) with the help of five other women, made a red, white and blue star quilt during the Civil War, which is on display in the Minnesota Historical Society Museum. It is a white background with red and blue triangles made into a star pattern; alternating blocks of all white, hand-quilted with the white thread showing a leaf pattern; quilt edged in red trim. It was passed down to her son, Alcedas Bistodeau, then to his daughter, Cecilia Bistodeau Beaudry, then to her daughter, the donor, Odell Beaudry.

We Already Had A Doctor in the Family

My g-g-g-grandpa was the first physician in Dayton Minnesota where he was known as Dr. Louis. I found some pictures of his bag, which is still there in Minnesota. These pictures and this information is copied verbatim from a website I found (I DID NOT WRITE THIS): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~patty0802/index.htm

Physician's bag used by Dr. Louis Bistodeau, first practicing doctor in Dayton. This item is on display at the Minnesota Historical Society

Shortly after marriage, Doctor and Mrs. Emelina Bistodeau traveled from Trois Rivers Quebec, Canada to a little village called St. Anthony Falls, Minnesota, of which is known to all as Minneapolis today. They arrived there on July 8, 1854. Dr. Bistodeau was the first doctor of Dayton, MN. Dr. Bistodeau traveled from Minneapolis to Dayton by walking and riding an Indian pony to care for the sick, later the town's people gave him a carriage.

Later Dr. Bistodeau moved his wife and family from Minneapolis to Dayton to be closer to his patients. There was not as much money in those days, so sometimes the doctor accepted vegetables, eggs or whatever they had for his fee. Dr. Bistodeau delivered many babies and cared for the sick and injured throughout his life. He was always happy helping where it was necessary. His black doctor's bag is now in the Hennepin County Historical Society (Minneapolis).

This is from page 1354 of "History of Hennepin County", Dr. L. Bistodeau came to Dayton from St. Paul, in June 1855. He was a graduate of the Quebec Medical Board of Examiners and he has been the only practicing physician in the town for thirty seven years. He has raised a family of fifteen living children, thus setting a good example, which was exceedingly well followed by the early settlers.

Dr. Bistodeau is also mentioned briefly in the book, "History of Anoka County and the Towns of Champlin and Dayton" published in 1976, on page 175:
"The first settlers of Dayton were Paul Godine and Isaiah Cowet, who came to the town in July 1852. The same year J. Veine made a claim where the village of Dayton now is and Marcellus Boulis and Benjamin Livia settled near the river. In 1854 Francis Thorndyke, R. H. Miller and John Shumway settled in Dayton near the Champlin line. The following year came Dr. L. Bistodeaux, who lived in the town thirty-seven years, and A.C. Kimball, who made a claim on the north shore of Diamond Lake."

Great Grandpa Joe (Billette)'s Profile and then some...

Joseph Delphas BILLETTE was born in Apr 1888 in Minnesota. He appeared on the census in 1910 in Dayton Township, Hennepin County, MN. He was buried in St. Albert's Cemetery, Albertville, Wright, MN. Parents: Louis Toussaint BILLETTE and Marie LOISELLE .
He was married to Annette BISTODEAU in 1909.

Great Great Grandpa Louis' Profile:
Louis Toussaint BILLETTE was born in Oct 1850 in Canada. He appeared on the census in 1900 in Otsego Township, Wright County, MN. He died before 1910 in Minnesota.
He was married to Marie LOISELLE about 1883. Children were: Aime Toussant BILLETTE, Joseph Delphas BILLETTE, Arthur BILLETTE, Unknown BILLETTE, Delvina BILLETTE.

(According to Grandma Billette, the "unknown Billette" should be Mack Billette who lived up Snowden and sold Grandma and Grandpa Billette the property up there. -JMB)
